In the novel Call of the Wild by Jack London the main character is a dog named Buck. He is abused by one of his early owners which he eventually leaves to join John Thorton who he really loves. They do everything together. Buck trusts John Thorton so much he does some risk stuff when John jokingly tells him to do. Their bond is mostly likely so great because Buck was abused at one time. This love is sort of like the passion Okonkwo has for being great in Chinua Achebe's novel Things Fall Apart. He is so comited to making a name for himself, that it seems like he doesn't like free time since it doesn't help him gain titles, yams, ect. In Call of the Wild, Buck is eventually seperated from John Thorton. This is like when Okonkwo is banished from his tribe for seven years for accidently killing a man.
